History
◆ Pre-Calamity
Ziero, like most Rava, was born in the Golmore Jungle in a medium sized village. He lived a simple life among the trees, learning the ways of the forest and helping his tribe. He quickly found that he had talent with numbers as well as first aid. Over the years he splinted many a twisted ankle and patched up various minor wounds.Approximately two years after he reached maturity at age 13, an adult Viera male came to the village. Ziero had known this day would come, when he would become a ward to one of the tribe's protectors. He bid farewell to his mother and friends, and left his home forever a few days later.Life was harsh under his mentor, but not bad. Most of his days he spent studying the Way of the Wood, the strict lifestyle that all male Viera followed as they lived in solitude. Ziero knew it would be years before he would earn the title of master and be allowed to set out on his own, becoming a protector of the tribe.Three years into his training, disaster struck. Ziero's mentor had recently been injured in a fight against a wild animal, and Ziero was caring for the man. A few days after the injury, a terrible storm of previously unseen proportions hit their homeland. As they hunkered down in the branches of a large tree, lightning struck it, causing many of the branches to shatter and fall. Ziero was able to land safely, but unfortunately his mentor was not so lucky. His weakness had made it difficult for him to move, and he was crushed in the fall. After the storm had cleared, Ziero picked his way through a forest floor littered with broken trees towards his village, carrying the body of his teacher. Upon returning, he found the inhabitants of the village cleaning up and recovering from the storm. The village leaders took charge of the body and told him that he needed to leave. He had not yet become a master of the way of the wood, and with his teacher dead, he would need to find his own way. Ziero knew what that meant, young male viera were left to die when they wouldn't keep up with their training, or in this case unable to continue their lessons at all. As such, the ruthless nature of his culture determined his fate. He was no longer eligible to become a protector of his tribe, and was effectively exiled from his village. With a heavy heart, Ziero left it all behind, looking back only once before he never set eyes on his prior home again. The next few months were spent alone in the jungle, using the skills he had learned to survive. He avoided contact with all other peoples, and after a time realized that there was nothing for him there.Ziero had heard of some Viera that had left the jungle, banishing themselves in self-exile to explore an entirely unknown world outside of the forest. After some consideration, he decided that since he had nothing else left to lose, he may as well join these so-called explorers. Gathering what supplies and goods he could carry, he set out from the Golmore Jungle one last time, never to return. Thus, Ziero began his life in the wider world of Hydaelyn.
◆ A Stranger in a New World
Ziero arrived in Othard, spending his time walking between the various villages there. He was fascinated by the people here and their way of life. ‘Modern society’ differed so vastly from what he had known his entire life, and he found himself drawn wholly into it.Doing odd jobs and manual labor to earn his keep as he traveled the land learning their ways and culture. Thus he spent the next two years traveling through Othard, the Azim Steppe, and even a brief visit to the port city of Kugane. One day, sitting in a tavern in a seaside town, he found himself talking to a man hailing from Eorzea, a far away land that he had only heard about in stories and third-hand accounts. He had always considered it some far off, strange nation, but having this opportunity to talk to someone from there was one he would not be likely to have again. He learned that Eorzea, even now, struggled to recover from an event known as the Calamity. The continent had been damaged greatly, and its people were in the midst of rebuilding their nations. He realized that the timing of the Calamity by his new friends' accounts roughly matched up with that of the thunderstorm that had changed his life forever.Making a decision that very night, Ziero decided to set off to this faraway land both to help those in need, as well as maybe learn more about the events leading up to such a major shift in his lifestyle. He soon gained passage on a merchant ship setting out to bring aid supplies out of Kugane, and spent the next two months on the high seas bound for a strange new land.
◆ Journey to Unfamiliar Lands
He made landfall in the grand city of Limsa Lominsa. The sheer size and complexity of the city floored Ziero as he watched what seemed like an endless parade of vessels sailing into and out of the seafaring capital. Saying farewell to his compatriots of the last few months, he sets out to explore this grand city.
It is not long before he finds himself in trouble, running afoul of some muggers on his first day in the port city. He was no stranger to bandits, but losing his purse right after arriving set back his plans a bit. Thus Ziero made his way out of Limsa Lominsa and set about exploring La Noscea. Along the way he continued his past-time of performing odd jobs and providing the occasional medical assistance to those in the more remote areas without a local healer. Similar to Othard, the people here seemed to have few survival skills compared to those from his homeland, many not knowing even basic poultices or bandaging practices. Nevertheless it earned him some coin or room and board, which he was grateful for. Many nights, however, he spent under the stars, looking up at an unfamiliar sky as strange winds caressed his body as he lay for sleep. What the viera hadn’t known when he began his journey here was that he had arrived at a relatively small island nation, not the whole of Eorzea. While he saw many signs of the disaster that had struck these lands, he heard stories of the other nations and how they had suffered as well.Realizing he would need to establish himself a bit more if he wanted to truly explore these lands, he returned to Limsa Lominsa and sought work. He found an old chirurgeon with a small clinic in the city and was hired as the old man’s assistant. There he learned about the body, surgery, and more non-magical healing than he had ever known existed.
◆ Taking Time to Heal
The following two years were spent under the tutelage of the old Hyurian man. The surgeon had seen many a battlefield through his years as part of The Maelstrom, and had spent even longer still as a civilian practitioner. The countless skills and amount of knowledge that he had gathered over his lifetime he passed on to Ziero. The viera learned how to heal others more than just fixing minor wounds with what tools he had available. He learned medicine, anatomy, surgical practices, and wound care. He learned what his mentor called the ‘science’ of healing, such as how infection could be kept at bay with certain balms and salves.During this time, Ziero helped in his mentor’s clinic. Fulfilling the roles of assistant, secretary, and overall do-er of things. He even had the opportunity to visit the grand cities of Gridania and Ul’dah during this time. During these two years he learned more about the Calamity than he ever would have just wandering blindly. The chirurgeon he worked with was a wealth of knowledge and beyond the practice of healing taught him about the history of Eorzea. This gave Ziero access to knowledge of what really happened in the past as opposed to folk tales he would have gotten from the occasional half-drunken villager in a tavern. As is life, all things must come to an end. While Ziero found passion in healing and helping others, his thirst to explore this new land never faded. Thus, when the aged doctor he worked under had declared he was ready to retire and hang up his coat, he encouraged his young protégé to set out on a journey to learn about both Eorzea and himself. With the wages saved from his time working, and a heavy sack of gil given to him as a farewell gift, Ziero set off to a new chapter in his life.
◆ Grabbing Life By the Reins
Using his savings and the knowledge he had gained from some friends he had made in the mercantile business, he purchased a wagon and a chocobo as well as some trade goods. With this, he set out across Eorzea as a traveling merchant. He found success in this profession, as the cost of transporting goods by aetheryte was prohibitively expensive, and shipping bulk items by airship wasn’t particularly affordable either. Thus he found himself working directly with craftsmen and businesses more often than not, buying their goods first-hand and selling them in other locales. He also began taking commissions, picking up goods from other cities or keeping an eye out for good deals on rare merchandise. These days, Ziero can usually be found on the road with his faithful chocobo friend Uno. Other times he may be in some cities' marketplace or dealing with business owners. Rarer still, you would find him in some small cafe or the like, sharing a meal with friends he’d made along the way. Though his travels take him far and wide, he always ensures to keep in touch with those he has come to hold dear.
